Sunday Market in Old Phuket Town


Phuket Walking Street is one of the more recent attractions in Phuket Old Town, it's also know as big market, which in Thai would be Talaad Yai. Phuket Walking Street has been going on since late 2013, and it's one of those weekly events one should not miss if being in Phuket Town on a Sunday. The market is held in Old Phuket Town, Thalang Road, which is right in the middle of the historical parts of Phuket Town.

Peranakans, known as "Phuket Babas" in the local tongue, constitute a fair share of members Chinese community, particularly among those who have family ties with the Peranakans of Penang and Malacca.

Thalang Road it self features a mix of Thai Muslim, Indian and Chinese shops, there are also some excellent restaurants and trendy smaller hotels here. The street itself is around 300 meters long, and the market is quite relaxed and very family oriented. Main reason to visit this market would be for the relaxing atmosphere, the most enjoyable street food, and to pick up some souvenirs to bring back home.

You can find barbecued chicken, pork and squid here, fruit juices, ice-creams and Thai sweets. You will also find the usual market type of goods here like t-shirts, fancy jewellery and all kind of inexpensive items. If you are planing to visit Phuket Town on your holiday, make sure to time up with this Sunday Market, opening hours are 4pm to 10pm, and it's most enjoyable in the late afternoon.
